EVALUATION

Image
"Yoga is not for the flexible. It's for the willing." EVALUATION When I measured my ROM using a goniometer during my initial straight leg raise test (before engaging myself into Yoga), it measured:  Hip Flexion (Knee Straight): 0-90 degrees Hip Abduction: 0-80 degrees Hip Extension: 0-50 degrees However, after doing the 5-day Yoga exercise (I did it for two weeks!) that I have prepared to improve my flexibility, these were the results when measured by a goniometer: Hip Flexion (Knee Straight): 0-110 degrees Hip Abduction: 0-90 degrees Hip Extension: 0-70 degrees These results (the before and the after) are actually not normal, this shows that my joints in these areas are hypermobile, which means that my joints have an unusuall large range of movement and I can move my limbs into positions others find impossible. This is most probably caused by my several years of dancing ballet.  PERSONAL EXPERIENCE I am not new to Yoga. Apparently, I hav...

WELLNESS JOURNAL

Hello again! As a ballerina, I'm still struggling with my leg extensions and worrying maybe it's still not good enough when I perform. So, in my previous blog, I've prepared a 5-day fitness plan for me to follow in order to reach my goal. Out of all the flexibility exercises, I chose Yoga because it does not only improve how far my legs will go but it is said to be good for one's mental well-being and lymphatic and digestive health . It's now time to put my fitness plan into reality! Follow me in my journey towards a more flexible self.  DAY 1   As they say, "You don't have to be great to start but you have to start to be great.".  So to begin, I did each exercise for 20 seconds and I repeated doing it for 3 times. It was actually a good start as I felt my hamstrings, quads, and back stretch. Forward Bend Tortoise Cat DAY 2 I had fun in Day 1 so today, I woke up and got up from the bed determined to do my flexibility exe...

MY FITNESS PLAN

Image
Out of the three fitness tests and measures, what I'd like to improve and to further strengthen is my FLEXIBILITY . As a ballerina, it is important for me to have high leg extensions and my body should be well-stretched before dancing. I believe that this workout schedule that I have prepared would really help and aid me in enhancing my flexibility.

FITNESS TESTS AND MEASURES

Image
TEST FOR AEROBIC CAPACITY TREADMILL TEST It is also known as the "exercise stress test" . This test is  used to determine how well the heart responds during times when it’s working its hardest . During the test, the individual is asked to exercise on a treadmill while hooked up to an electrocardiogram (EKG) machine which allows the medical personnel to monitor one's heart rate. The treadmill is an appropriate mode to assess the  VO2 max of most patients/clients because it can be programmed for walking, jogging, or running speeds. The advantage of this test is that one can obtain a patient's maximum heart rate without relying upon one's age-predicted MHR when prescribing training HR range. However, the downside of this test is the cost of the equipment.  The Balke Treadmill Exercise Test It was developed as a clinical test to determine peak VO 2  in cardiac patients, though it can also be used to estimate cardiovascular fitness in athletes....

CASE SCENARIO

Case 3.  You are an outpatient physical therapist, and one of your patients, Joe, is under your care for restorative physical therapy secondary to a sporting accident. Although you instruct Joe to hold each stretch you prescribe for 30 to 60 seconds, you hold your stretches for 6 seconds when you stretch in the clinic during your lunch break, and Joe happens to be present and notices you. Despite your request, Joe may mimic you, his doctor, and not hold his stretches for a significant duration. As his Physical Therapist, I will tell Joe not to mimic my 6-second hold during stretching because unlike him, I am presently not suffering from any injury because of a sporting accident. What I was doing was just a stretch and hold that a normally conditioned person would do. I would advice him that he needs to strictly follow the 30-60-second hold as he performs his stretches so that he could go back to his normal state as well as his limit in function could greatly enhance after ...

WELLNESS MODEL

Image
"Wellness is a connction of paths, knowledge and action." - Joshua Welch Out of all the wellness models presented in the book, I believe that the one that should be adapted in the physical therapy practice is the Humanistic Model of Wellness . The first reason why the HMW is the most fitting to our profession as Physical Therapists is that it contains all of the three dimensions of well-being as given by the World Health Organization which are physical, mental, and social aspects of an individual. Moreover, it also acknowledges the three domains of learning which are cognitive, psychomotor, and affective, as supported in the American Physical Therapy Association's A Normative Model of Physical Therapist Professional Education: 2004 Version . Another factor that made me decide that this is the most applicable is the usage of SWS which is an instrument to operationalize the said model and is designed to be used by a physical therapist in doing the tests and...
